About Black Soap

Picture
Raw Black Soap from West Africa
Black soap has many names: African black soap, anago soap or alata simena (Ghana) or ose dudu (Nigeria).

Black Soap is one of the healthiest soaps for the skin due to the purity and simplicity of the ingredients. In Togo, black soap is the only soap used by mothers to wash their newborn babies, as its purity makes it gentle and non-drying for their sensitive skin. Our black soap is produced in small batches by hand, using age-old traditional techniques.

Traditional Black Soap is brownish-black in color. It is soft with an organic shape. It has a delicate texture and a natural earthy smell. It is not oily or scented. Black Soap has been used for African hair and skin care for centuries.  Black soap is excellent for bathing, showering, shaving and shampooing. Today people from all walks of life are benefiting from this amazing African  soap. African black soap is mostly found in Ghana although, other countries have their own version of African black soap.

Properties:
  • Helps deep clean and exfoliate the skin.
  • Used to remove excess oils from the skin, which helps to treat and prevent acne.
  • Used on most skin types including rough and dry.
  • Helps with bumps and spots.
  • Helps reveal radiant, fresh, and healthy skin.
  • Soothes several types of skin irritations, such as razor burn, rashes and eczema.

People suffering from eczema often have difficulty finding products that care for their dry, sensitive skin without irritating it or provoking an outbreak. Black soap might help reduce your eczema outbreaks because it's gentler on your skin that most chemical-laden commercial soaps.

SKIN CARE USES
Showering & Bathing: Lather up with our natural black soap. Wet your sponge or wash cloth, rub the black soap on the sponge or wash cloth and you are ready for a shower or bath. Follow with our 100% West African Shea Butter to leave you with clean, moisturised, lustrous skin after a shower or bath.

For your face: You can just use our natural skin care black soap for just your face if you wish. You can wash your face once or twice a day. Or you can give yourself a facial with our black soap. It's simple. Get a small towel, dip it into some warm water, squeeze out and place the towel over your face for about 10 seconds or until the towel goes cold. Repeat several times. When you are done, wash your beautiful face with our black soap. Don't forget behind your ears, under your chin and your neck. Rinse with warm water. Moisturize with our 100% West African Shea Butter if needed.

You can also make a face mask with the raw black soap.
Step 1: Cut a small portion of soap off the main bar--approximately 1-inch square or the size of a screw-on cap from a soda bottle.
Step 2: Put the soap in a dish with 2 oz. of warm distilled or filtered water. Let the soap sit for 10 minutes, or until it becomes mushy. Mash the soap with your fingers and mix 2 oz. raw honey in with the mashed soap. Mix thoroughly to ensure that all the honey is incorporated.
Step 3: Apply the honey/soap mixture to your neck and face as you would any other face mask. Leave the mask on for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse your face in warm water and pat dry with a clean, soft towel.

For your hair: That's right! Before there was shampoo, there was black soap. For centuries Africans have been washing their hair with this amazing soap. Don't take it from us. Try it yourself! Wet your hair, rub black soap in your hair until it lathers. Wash your hair, rinse & repeat the process until your hair is clean. When you are done, use your regular hair conditioner and of course don't forget your 100% Jamaican Virgin Coconut Oil or Coconut & Lemongrass Hydrating Oil. You need to feed your hair too!

FAQs ABOUT RAW BLACK SOAP
INGREDIENTS: African black soap uses only natural ingredients and contains no preservatives, colour enhancers, or fragrances. Instead raw black soap generally contains: plantain skin, palm kernel oil, palm oil, cocoa pod ash, coconut oil, and honey. The leaves and bark from palm trees, shea trees, plantains and cocoa pods are turned to ashes. Water, coconut oil, and palm oil are added to the mixture as well. Black soap includes iron and vitamins A & E because of the plantains used in the soap-making process. African black soap creates a soft lather without the animal fat additives that are commonly used in soaps.

STORAGE: Black soap contains a high concentration of glycerin, causing it to absorb moisture from the air quickly. This means that the raw black soap is malleable and dissolves easily in water. This type of soap will last longer when stored in a sealed, dry container,  saran wrap or in a zip lock bag or bag. It is also best to only wet the portion you intend to use so that the main bar lasts longer.

SHELF LIFE: Black Soap does not go bad. It can be used at any time.

COLOUR: Black soaps have a dark colour that corresponds to the length of time its ingredients have been roasted: the longer the roasting process, the darker the product. You should expect variations in colour, especially in raw soaps.

BOXED BLACK SOAPS
In addition to raw black soap, we also carry two brands of boxed soaps, as outlined before.

Dudu-Osun African Black Soap: The name comes from Yoruba (one of the languages spoken in Nigeria), as Ose means 'soap' and dudu means 'black.' Specially formulated entirely from natural ingredients and herbs, this soap will have you feeling refreshed and silky smooth. Restores damaged skin and is helpful in healing chronic eczema, acne, and dark spots. Scented with Osun (Camwood extract), citrus juices, and native honey. With Aloe vera and natural vitamins. Here is some information about the benefits of Dudu Osun African Black Soap:
  • It is 100% derived from natural, organic ingredients. In other words, Dudu Osun has no chemical additives.
  • All the ingredients used in making Dudu Osun African Black Soap are organically grown in Nigeria.
  • It is relatively large in size: it weighs 150g, and lasts 2-3 times longer than your regular bath soap.
  • It is highly enriched with raw shea butter.

I used the Dudu-Osun black soap to wash my hair the other day and I think I officially bid adieu to shampoos!

Nubian Heritage Black Soap with Shea Butter: This soap combines the ancient medicinal properties of Black Soap with the hydrating properties of Shea Butter to balance problem skin. Nubian Heritage Black Soap contains palm ash, plantain peel extract, tamarind extract, and papya enzymes. This powerful combination is traditionally used to treat eczema, acne, oily skin, psoriasis, and other skin ailments. Historical references to Shea Butter, a staple of African pharmacology, date back to the reported Shea Butter caravans of Cleopatra's Egypt. Nubian Heritage Black Soap combines botanical extracts and salicylic acid to effectively treat acne, balance skin tone, and improve skin texture.

These soaps are the best. My 5 year-old has sensitive skin and sometimes others soaps (even the Cetaphil bars) burn her but these work so good for her. I don't think I will use anything else. I love the African Black Soap.

CAUTION: If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may experience a skin reaction to black soap that has a high concentration of cocoa pods (the ash). Because caffeine may be absorbed through the skin, those who have caffeine sensitivities should carefully test the product before beginning regular use.
